Just over two years ago I was a struggling personal stylist working in a small French village in the South of France trying to get clients whatever way I could. I really wanted to make consistent income from my colour and style services so I wouldn't have to find a 9-5 job doing something that bored the life out of me.
I wanted to be able to make more than pocket money in my business so that I could justify to my family why I was spending so much time working.
The thing is I was only making a few hundred dollars a month, and many months I actually lost money. I was working long hours yet getting very little return and it was really difficult trying to justify to my family why I was spending so much time away from them.
To make things worse, I felt terrible because I couldn't contribute to supporting my family and the household bills. I felt even worse about the situation because I was spending so many hours attending events and networking that I wasn't even there for my family.
I felt ashamed and a failure.
Everything came to a head when my husband demanded that I spend more time with him and my two boys so I had to figure out a way to work less but earn more. Initially I thought it meant giving up on my dream of working as a personal stylist and going back to 9-5 work which meant going back to a job that I didn't enjoy.
Then, as if by chance, something amazing happened...
I was browsing on a Colour Analysis Facebook Group and I realised that I could work online. It was definitely a light bulb moment.
I quickly created an online colour service and started promoting it but I soon realised that getting clients online was just as hard as it was traditionally.
I realised that I needed get clear on who my 'ideal client' was so I could reach them.
It took me months of working with coaches before I got clear on who I should be targeting.
Once I knew who she was I created every single post, every single message and every single service just for her.
I was able to start charging more for my services because I was solving a big painful problem for my ideal client.
I knew exactly how to get my message across on social media so my exact ideal client started to buy from me.
I learned that casting your net wide and trying to appeal to everyone doesn't work, you need to focus on who your ideal client is and how to solve a problem for them instead.
My ideal client was a woman online entrepreneur who had her own online coaching business.
It was easy to locate and to connect with this exact type of person and build a relationship because I knew exactly who she was.
Suddenly, I was getting people responding back and asking how they could work with me.
That’s when I realized that the secret was to niche down and become an expert for one particular type of client.
My plan was to create a high value program specifically for my ideal client.
So I created a wardrobe bootcamp program designed specifically for her. But I didn’t stop there.
I then went live and talked about my program and how I could help this particular woman every single day.
After that, I ran the high value program several times.
But there was still a problem...
My clients loved my program but I didn't. I had never loved poking in people's wardrobes so I’m still wondering why I created a program around it??
I ended up getting so frustrated that we decided to I decided to redo my program with services I loved providing such as colour and style and I took out the wardrobe audit altogether.
I thought if we could create something that would make it possible to totally love what I was doing every day and send my clients away delighted, I’d be really happy. You see, not only is identifying you ideal client important, you also need to consider your zone of genius, which is the work you love doing so much that you’d do it for free!
After 6 months of trial and error I had a program that me and my client loved and I was getting the steady flow of clients online that I always wanted - I had created a program that not only my ideal client loved but that I loved running too.
I could now work from anywhere in the world and have a steady flow of clients doing work I loved every day.
I began helping other personal stylists find their ideal client and their zone of genius almost two years ago now through my Ideal Client Challenge.
My journey to finding my Ideal client and Zone of Genius was so torturous that I was called to help other personal stylists find theirs though a simple and practical process while holding their hand and guiding them every step of the wat.
I have run the Ideal Client challenge live 8 times and now I have set it up so you can have access to it anythime and take it as many times as you like at your own pace.
